Days in Donetsk

Larry is working in Lux and the boys and I are in Donetsk during our 10Remove Formatting from selection day waiting period. We are sharing an apartment with Heather Smith who is here adopting two girls. (see our list of other blogs) We are both being challenged by trying to find clothes/shoes/coat/pj/etc and a backpack to fully outfit our new family member(s) to provide clothes to wear leaving the orphanage plus enough to wear for the rest of the time spent in Ukraine. The street vendors are more affordable than the big retail stores. The fancy clothing stores are expensive and still do not offer the full range of sizes. It has been difficult wondering thru the maze of street vendors looking for girls clothing. Finally finding a vendor shop stacked with girl items then trying to communicate what we are looking for, sizes, colors, styles. Girls jeans here are decorated with all kind of 'stuff' and I am having trouble finding any that are just jeans. Shoes have been a real problem. Limited girl styles and sizes. Socks too, nothing is plain and simple. The boys have been so patient with all of the walking and shopping.

If any of you noticed the Ukraine time clock difference, daylight savings time ended here 10/26. So we will be temporarily 6 hours different from EST until your clocks fall back next week.

We stayed so long into our adoption it was fall (we got there mid summer) and when we finally left the orphanage our facilitator asked for a coat for our son because we could not find one his size in the small village. I had HUGE guilt for taking an orphanage coat...I will be bringing it back this trip since we hope to adopt from the same orphanage!

Dear Parker Family,
This is Evan's 1-2 class writing to you. We are missing Evan a lot and can't wait for him to be back in our class! We are really excited to hear about your new sister! We can't wait to meet her and find out about her. We just looked at your slideshow of pictures. All the fish are healthy and alive! We are proud of ourselves! Some news from our class is that we have a new student named Jesse or J.J. We were wondering if you have lost any teeth. Have a good rest of your trip and we can't wait to see you!

Parker Family,

I was in Donetsk at this time in 2006. I stayed at Hotel Victoria, which had a bowling alley and a miniature golf course on the property. There is also a good restaurant across the walk from the hotel. They also have an amazing pool with a huge slide but I don't know if it is open to the public. Here's the info
Victoria Hotel Donetsk
14 A Mira Avenue

Good luck with the rest of the process. We adopted a 13 yo girl from Kharkov in 2007. She is bright but also did not start school when she should have. We have had to fight with our school to get her the services she needs. They continue to say her problems are only related to language differences. I was encouraged to have her tested in Russian as soon as she arrived in order to have a baseline of her abilities in Russian. That set of information has proved invaluable. Email me if you need additional info when you get home.
